Primary Health Care and Reproductive Health

Pakistan with a population of 158.1 million is the world’s sixth most-populated country and the third largest contributor to worldwide population growth. Rising at a rate of almost 2 percent each year, the population is expected to reach 220 million by the year 2020. The population is young, with about 25 percent under the age of 25. A large percent of the population resides in rural areas.
Health has been a low priority area in Pakistan where defense and foreign debt servicing have often consumed the entire domestic resources. The government spends about 2 percent of its budget (as percentage of GDP) on health. An ill-regulated private sector accounts for nearly 80 percent of the health services.
Pakistan’s health indicators are at the lower end globally. About one in 10 children die before the age of five. One in 200 women die during childbirth. This high rate of maternal mortality is due to direct obstetric causes, which are preventable. On the other hand, improvements are noted in the area of Reproductive Health. Unmet need for family planning has lowered down to 25% (200-07) from 32% (1990) and a rise in the mean age of marriage in females from 16.9 years in 1951 to 22.7 years in 2001-2002, total fertility in Pakistan has declined significantly from 6.7 in 1985 to 4.32 in 2007-08. Contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR) of 30 % (married women) is at plateau and has not shown change over almost a decade.
